Home After Surgery
YOU
MUST ARRANGE FOR A RESPONSIBLE ADULT TO CARE FOR YOU 24 HOURS AFTER SURGERY.
Your surgeon will provide postoperative
instructions regarding diet, activities, and medications. In the event
of any difficulty, notify your surgeon.
It is normal to feel a little
sleepy and/or dizzy for several hours after your operation. Do not sign
any important papers or make any significant decisions until this feeling
has worn off. Do not drive, smoke or consume alcoholic beverages until
the day after surgery at the earliest.
During the First 24
Hours
- You should have a responsible
adult stay with you all day and night.
- Rest, do not do anything
that requires balance, judgment, or coordination, such as driving the
car or using household appliances.
- Do not make important decisions
or sign notarized documents.
- Start with a liquid or soft
diet and advance as tolerated. Do not consume any alcohol for 24 hours
and while taking pain medication.
- You may experience any of
the following symptoms: drowsiness, nausea, muscle soreness, throat
irritation, mild tenderness at your I.V. site.
Please Notify Your
Doctor If You Are Experiencing
- Unexpected or uncontrolled
pain
- Uncontrolled nausea
- Unexpected bleeding from
surgical site.
- Fever over 101 degrees or
skin rash.
- Inability to empty your
bladder within 6 hours
If you are
unable to contact your doctor or the surgery center, you should go to
the nearest emergency room.
